How to Replace an Outside Tap (Step-by-Step Guide)

If your outside tap is leaking, stiff to turn, or just looking a bit tired, it might be time for a replacement. The good news? Replacing an outdoor tap is usually a simple job  but there are a few things to watch out for to avoid leaks and damage. Here’s a friendly guide from the team at DM Emergency Plumbing to help you get it right.

1. Turn Off the Water Supply

Before you do anything, make sure to turn off the water feeding the outside tap. This could be an isolation valve inside your home or your main stop tap. Once it’s off, open the outside tap to drain any remaining water.

2. Remove the Old Tap

Use an adjustable spanner to unscrew the old tap from the wall fitting. Keep a towel or small container handy a little water might still drip out. If the tap is stuck, try gently wiggling it rather than forcing it.

3. Clean the Fittings

Once the old tap is off, give the threads on the pipe a quick clean with a cloth or wire brush. Remove any old PTFE tape or sealant so your new tap has a clean, tight connection.

4. Wrap PTFE Tape

Wrap a few layers of PTFE  tape around the thread of the new tap in a clockwise direction. This helps create a watertight seal.

5. Fit the New Tap

Screw the new tap into the wall fitting by hand first, then gently tighten it with your spanner. Be careful not to overtighten that can damage the fitting.

6. Turn the Water Back On

Turn your water supply back on slowly and check for leaks. If everything’s dry and the tap runs smoothly  job done!
